Philology names its assembly hall after Emilia Pardo Bazán
Throughout 2021, the Faculty of Philology carried out a series of activities to commemorate the centenary of the death of Emilia Pardo Bazán, who was the first professor at the Universidad Central, the former name of the Complutense University of Madrid. As the culmination of this year of activities, the Faculty has decided to name the assembly hall in Building D after the writer, in an event which has been used to present the book Defensa de lo contemporáneo, written by the vice-dean José Manuel Lucía Megías, which recounts in detail Pardo Bazán’s years as a professor.
Naming the hall after “La” Pardo Bazán was an almost obligatory act of recognition, intending to fill the college’s space with the history it really owned.
The naming of the lecture hall and the plaque bearing his name were voted on unanimously at this meeting, as Emilia Pardo Bazán was a pioneer in the defence of contemporary literature. She was also unique in introducing the study of contemporary literature, enabling us to understand our present, and the future associated with it”.
