The EMT buses will be free on September 1, 7 and 8
The Madrid City Council will again apply the free buses of the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) at the return of summer, this time during the 24 hours of September 1 and on September 7 and 8, these days in the that school activity is restarted, to encourage the use of public transport.
The Environment and Mobility delegate, Borja Carabante, already advanced yesterday that the free municipal buses would be applied again at the return of summer.
“As we promised last year, throughout this year there will be different moments of free public transport, specifically the EMT buses, on September 1, after returning from work, and on September 7 and 8, which is when the school activity begins “, explained the delegate.
The EMT buses will be free during the 24 hours of those days, not only at rush hour (from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.) during the first fortnight of September. Carabante has added that there will be free throughout the year “at specific times of increased traffic “, such as during Christmas or when the ‘Black Friday’ of sales is celebrated in shops.
According to the delegate, “during those free days ” it is seen that these days there is “around a 3% increase in demand “. “Therefore, there are 3% more passengers, 3% who are not usually regular users, and who therefore know the benefits of public transport “, Carabante stressed, adding that this initiative “intends that these occasional users who take the bus on the free service become regular users ” to continue promoting public transport.
Thus, this initiative “is giving results”, also reducing “congestion and pollution” with less use of private vehicles, Carabante assured. He added that “when one also analyzes the activity or demand for public transport throughout the summer, we are seeing that we are above 90%” of use of Madrid buses in August compared to 2019, “with points even 97 % especially on weekends”. At the same time, traffic decreased this month to 17% in the central almond in the city and 13.5% in the outskirts.
The free service on September 1, 7 and 8 will not be extended to Bicimad electric bicycles, and the delegate recalled that “there were also several free days” for this service coinciding with Mobility Week (19, September 20 and 21, 2021).
The Community will adjust the frequency of public transport after the 50% reduction in subscriptions
” Bicimad, because of the lack of confidence (of the pandemic), has had points where it has had the records of daily users, reaching 17,000 daily uses. Now we are around 11,000 or 12,000″, the delegate pointed out. With the lack of confidence there was an “expansion of cycling mobility “, and on the occasions that Bicimad has been free “we have also seen that many people come”.
“There are more and more users, but what is going to be, of course, the Bicimad revolution is the renewal of each one of the bicycles. We are going to renew all the bicycles, we are going to go from 2,500 to 7,500, and from 250 bases to 650 bases, with a new bicycle model”, highlighted Carabante. He recalled that the current Bicimad bicycle model is from 2013 and stressed that now “there is much more reliable technology ” and of “higher quality”, so “all” the bicycles will be renewed.
